River Cottage

River Cottage is famous for giving millions of TV viewers a taste for great cooking since 1998, when Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall first brought his famous food ethos to Channel 4. Their hard-hitting campaigns have changed the eating habits of a nation and improved the welfare and sustainability of animals and fish.

River Cottage splits neatly into two. River Cottage HQ, found on the Devon and Dorset border, is the base for the award-winning Cookery and Chefs' School, unique dining experiences and memorable events. There are three award-winning Canteens and delis based in the South West; Axminster, Bristol and Winchester where they combine their philosophy of using local, seasonal produce from the finest producers to create delicious food.

River Cottage

River Cottage has always been committed to sustainability. From the outset the River Cottage team set out to insure that River Cottage HQ is low carbon, low energy and as low impact as possible.

Through numerous systems like a bio-mass boiler that is fuelled with wood pellets from waste created by the local saw mill industry clearings to the reed beds that naturally process effluent from the site; sustainability has been the primary design focus of the project. The long term aim being to create a zero carbon site.

Sustainability measures at River Cottage go beyond energy saving and sustainable building. The site includes a working organic farm which provides much of the food used at HQ. The River Cottage nose-to-tail approach of using the entire animal means that very little is wasted. Any waste food is composted for use on the land or sent to a local anaerobic digester that creates methane for energy use.

The menus are changed with the seasons and sustainability is a key consideration. When ingredients used in the menus can’t be grown on site they are carefully sourced from local, sustainable suppliers; most of which are within a few miles of the farm.

As the River Cottage business has grown their ethos and commitment to sustainability has extended beyond HQ and to all areas of the business.  The four River Cottage Canteens source seasonal local produce and work to limit and reduce waste. Their excellent environmental credentials have been recognised by the Sustainable Restaurant Association who have awarded the River Cottage Canteens and HQ with their top three star rating. The Plymouth Canteen has also won the Most Sustainable Restaurant in the UK awarded by the SRA.
