Climate change does occur naturally but normally changes occur gradually over thousands of years. There is broad scientific consensus that human activities; most significantly the burning of fossil fuels, and the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, are significantly increasing global average temperatures and accelerating climate change.
Climate change is the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today. A 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) outlines the likely effects: changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather. As sunlight hits the Earth’s surface, some energy is reflected back out into space and some is absorbed by the atmosphere. This natural process is the greenhouse effect.
