About IceAdvice
Through IceAdvice, we aim to provide transparent and unbiased advice that helps you understand how the simple everyday decisions you make affect the environment and contribute towards climate change.
Climate change does occur naturally but normally changes occur gradually over thousands of years. There is broad scientific consensus that human activities; most significantly the burning of fossil fuels, and the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, are significantly increasing global average temperatures and accelerating climate change. Climate change is the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today. A 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) outlines the likely effects: changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather. For more information on the potential impacts of climate change please refer to the Directgov Climate Change page.
As sunlight hits the Earth’s surface, some energy is reflected back out into space and some is absorbed by the atmosphere. This natural process is the greenhouse effect. The atmosphere’s capacity to absorb heat depends on how much of it is made up of ‘greenhouse’ gases. The Atmosphere is incredibly important it’s what keeps the planet at a habitable temperature.
If the proportion of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere significantly increases, the amount of heat energy retained inside the Earth’s atmosphere will increase, the system will lose balance and average temperatures will rise. That’s what has been happening, and is happening now.
Ice can help you reduce the amount of greenhouse gases for which you are personally responsible, by helping you understand and reduce your carbon footprint.
A carbon footprint is a measure of your CO2 emissions. By reducing your carbon footprint, you reduce your environmental impact and help to slow climate change.
Shopping with Ice means choosing from a range of products and services that we have specially selected for their environmental credentials. This makes it easy for you to shop sustainably, buy products with low food miles, support local growers, save energy and spend less money.
